RSR-Style 1974 Porsche 911 Coupe

This is not a restored Porsche. It’s a ground-up, fully re-engineered build created for someone who understands what “done right” actually means. Every system has been rebuilt, upgraded, or custom-fabricated with obsessive attention to detail, modern performance standards, and long-term reliability in mind. The result is a rare, investment-grade air-cooled Porsche that delivers modern drivability with unmistakable classic presence.

Built by VS Restorations and Rothsport Racing, two of the most respected Porsche specialists in the country, this car represents the upper tier of custom air-cooled builds – both in execution and intent.

The body was acid-dipped, undercoating was removed, and epoxy metal conditioning was applied before the build commenced at Vintage Sportscar Restorations. Custom-fabricated steel wheel arch flares were welded in, a custom decklid and bumper covers were fabricated, and a central fuel filler was added to the early-style hood. Further details include Talbot side mirrors, LED projector headlights, tinted windows, and silver-finished badging and trim.

Rotiform 17” wheels are finished in satin black with brushed lips and are wrapped in Toyo Proxes TQ tires measuring 245/35 up front and 315/35 out back. The stance is aggressive yet balanced, achieved through custom steel flares measuring 11 inches in the rear and 9 inches in the front, butt-welded into the body for a seamless, factory-level finish.

Over 600 hours of hand fabrication went into the custom bumpers, designed to fit the body perfectly while modernizing airflow and visual proportion. Signal Yellow Glasurit paint was selected for the exterior, and painted Porsche lettering and side stripes were added before clearcoat was applied. Paint protection film has been added to the hood, fenders, front bumper, and sides of the car. Glass and weatherstripping were replaced, and exposed hardware received a cerakote coating in brushed aluminum. Custom housings were created for the front indicators and taillights.

The decklid is fully custom – ducktail spoiler, hand-fabricated aluminum frame, and a one-piece metal mesh grille for the engine opening. The vertical lines at the sides mirror the lines on the front hood. The ducktail height was dialed in specifically for this car – not borrowed from a kit or pre-fab mold. Also its metal, not fiberglass. The bodywork was modified with a central fuel filler, custom steel flared wheel arches, and a custom decklid and bumper covers, while the chassis was reinforced and updated with an Elephant Racing GT3 front suspension, VonShocks adjustable coilovers, hollow rear torsion bars, quick-change front braces, and four-piston monobloc brake calipers.

The power-adjustable Recaro front seats are trimmed in gray Spinneybeck leather with woven multicolor inserts and ring-grommet ventilation. The upholstery scheme carries over to the dashboard, rear jump seats, and 964-style door panels, while the headliner and sun visors are done in yellow leather. Bound squareweave carpets line the floors, and a Rennline pedal set, passenger floorboard, and heater controls have been installed. A WEVO short shifter is topped by a Black Forest Industries billet knob, and other appointments include a Classic Retrofit electric air conditioning system, power windows, LED interior lighting, and a Pioneer digital media receiver concealed in the glovebox.

The MOMO Black Edition steering wheel sits ahead of yellow-dial VDO instrumentation consisting of a clocked tachometer flanked by a 180-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 234 miles.

The naturally aspirated Variocam flat-six was built using a Rothsport 3.8-liter Big Bore EFI kit, Pauter chromoly connecting rods, racing-specification valve springs with titanium retainers, 48mm individual throttle bodies, a 964 crankshaft, and 996 GT3 resonance intake plenums. Engine management is provided by a MoTeC M84 ECU, and the wiring harness and fuse box were replaced during the build. Additional equipment include coil-on-plug ignition, dual front-mounted oil coolers, side track-level finned dual brass oil cooler lines, brass fuel lines, and a rear-mounted oil cooler with a thermostat. Output is said to have been measured on a dyno at 360 horsepower.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a G50 five-speed manual transaxle that was rebuilt at Rothsport in 2016 and modified with a G50 Club limited-slip differential. Stainless-steel headers flow to a coated stainless-steel GT3-style exhaust system with twin central outlets.

Three quick-change aluminum chassis braces span the front trunk, which is trimmed to complement the cabin. The hood and decklid liners are accented with diamond-pattern stitching.
